Liberty Christian Crowned VIC Champion

The VIC results are in…it was an historic meet at historic Fisburne Military School in Waynesboro. Although Liberty Christian out distanced the field by more than 70 points, a mere 20 points was the difference between runner-up North Cross and 5th place finisher Virginia Episcopal. LCA sent nine wrestlers to the finals and came away with five championships, perhaps none as surprising as Winston Tesi’s victory over Win Higginbotham at 160. The Bulldog’s also had two wrestlers in the consolation finals. Hargrave Military came away with three champions, but they were unable to overcome the depth of the North Cross team who featured a lone champion supported by nine medal winners. A mere ½ point separated these two teams. Interestingly, HMA and NXS battled head-to-head five times in the championship and consolation finals; the Tigers came away with five of the bouts.

Team Results
  1. Liberty Christian, 199.0
  2. North Cross, 126.0
  3. Hargrave Military, 125.5
  4. Roanoke Catholic, 115.0

  6. Covenant, 97.0
  7. Fishburne, 58.0
  8. Miller School, 47.0

The championship finals featured nine falls, with three in the first period, suggesting relative dominance over the conference competition. LCA’s Marcus Miller (119) and Robbie McCanna (189) each scored first period pins as did VES’s Guilliano Freeo (152). Freeo appears to be fully recovered from illness that precluded him from competing since before the LCA Tournament. Hepting, Hepting, & Bell (103, 130 & 285) produced three championship falls for HMA, while Bobby Leffew (125) and Ethan Hagner (215) provided the other pins for LCA. Brent Ring, who had been toiling in relative anonymity all season, also produced a pin at 145.

Blue Ridge Takes the Cavalier Cup

The CAC Finals were held on Friday at Benedictine (I felt like I was at Fenway Park). With only three active teams in the conference, each wrestled the other in a dual format. Individual medals were awarded based on results with in the weight-class. Blue Ridge came away with the CAC Cup followed by Benedictine.

The individual results are list below. I tried to fill in the names that I could; apoligies to the wrestlers – most like the case with MMA – whom I have wrong. A few observations…

  • It appears that Dan Desenberg’s has lost the battle of the bulge and he will be wrestling at 112 from here on out...unless of course he cuts weight this week.
  • Benedictine’s team appears to be coming together. Although they only had 7 wrestlers compete, they had 13 guys on the team.
  • Benedictine’s Alex Fort (152) and Ryan Logan (171) delivered mild upsets over Blue Ridge’s Ryan Dick and Drew LoCurto, both of whom had come home with 2nd at the LCA Tournament.
  • MMA’s Mathew McCormick (145) breezed through; he should be competitive at states.
  • The 285 match lasted 14 seconds…what a surprise.
